From the supplier: A number of food and drug companies are planning to market plant sterols to meet consumers' needs for cholesterol-reducing foods. Novartis Nutrition received license rights to market sterol-based food products, manufactured from compounds developed by Vancouver, BC-based biotech firm Forbes Medi-Tech, in Jan 1998. Procter and Gamble also acquired a patent for a cholesterol-reducing, sterol-based compound developed for food or medicinal use in 1997. However, experts doubt the success of plant sterols in the marketplace until clinical research which shows evidence of their effectiveness is revealed.
